For people with PSE, it is especially hazardous to view television in a dark room, at close range, or when the television is out of adjustment and is showing a rapidly flickering image (as when the horizontal hold is incorrectly adjusted on analog television sets). Television has traditionally been the most common source of seizures in PSE. Sensitivity is increased by alcohol consumption, sleep deprivation, illness, and other forms of stress. Some patients are more sensitive with their eyes closed others are more sensitive with their eyes open. Stimuli perceived with both eyes are usually much more likely to cause seizures than stimuli seen with one eye only (which is why covering one eye may allow patients to avoid seizures when presented with visual challenges). Stimuli that fill the entire visual field are more likely to cause seizures than those that appear in only a portion of the visual field. The exact spacing of a pattern in time or space is important and varies from one individual to another: a patient may readily experience seizures when exposed to lights that flash seven times per second, but may be unaffected by lights that flash twice per second or twenty times per second. Some patients are more affected by patterns of certain colours than by patterns of other colours. Contrasts in colour alone (without changes in luminance) are rarely triggers for PSE. The patterns are usually high in luminance contrast (bright flashes of light alternating with darkness, or white bars against a black background). Several characteristics are common in the trigger stimuli of many people with PSE. In some cases, the trigger must be both spatially and temporally cyclic, such as a certain moving pattern of bars. Static spatial patterns such as stripes and squares may trigger seizures as well, even if they do not move. Flashing lights or rapidly changing or alternating images (as in clubs, around emergency vehicles, near overhead fans, in action movies or television programs, etc.) are examples of patterns in time that can trigger seizures, and these are the most common triggers. The visual trigger for a seizure is generally cyclic, forming a regular pattern in time or space. Many PSE patients experience an " aura" or feel odd sensations before the seizure occurs, and this can serve as a warning to a patient to move away from the trigger stimulus. The exact nature of the stimulus or stimuli that triggers the seizures varies from one patient to another, as does the nature and severity of the resulting seizures (ranging from brief absence seizures to full tonic–clonic seizures). People with PSE experience epileptiform seizures upon exposure to certain visual stimuli. PSE affects approximately one in 4,000 people (5% of those with epilepsy). Photosensitive epilepsy ( PSE) is a form of epilepsy in which seizures are triggered by visual stimuli that form patterns in time or space, such as flashing lights bold, regular patterns or regular moving patterns. Based on BBB files So stop apologizing when you get a bad Yelp review from the Anton Egos of the world. Because you know that guy is going to want to get into an online war. You’d rather serve nice people who appreciate the products and services you work hard to provide. Tell the customer you’re both better if he goes somewhere else. You depend on your business for your livelihood. To me, that’s even worse than apologizing. The public needs to see that you’re not going to accept a bad review like it’s a fact. If you have done something wrong, admit it and fix what you can. Don’t take responsibility for inaccurate, unwarranted comments. We also know that for every one customer who takes the time to leave a Yelp review – positive or negative – there are tens of thousands who have better things to do with their lives than praising (or disparaging) a small business owner trying to earn a living. We know that some people leave bad reviews just to extort business owners, and some states like Arizona are actually taking legislative action to put a stop to that practice. We know that even Yelp – like Google and Amazon reviews – can be rigged and that some reviews are dubious at best. We also know that there are plenty of losers with their own personal issues that have no better way to spend their time than to anonymously criticize a food establishment because the soda they received didn’t have enough ice. And if you manage to accumulate thousands – or even hundreds – of Yelp reviews and 98% of them are positive then you’re fine. A snotty reviewer like Anton Ego is now only one puny voice among thousands. My advice: stand up for yourself and fight.įight because the public already knows the truth. But is this really good advice? No, it’s not. Acknowledge the complaint and show the public that you’re aware of the problem and will address it. The industry adviser’s advice is the general consensus among most experts. “The other readers will see that you are responsive and caring for your customers,” he writes. One of them, for example, a restaurant industry adviser, says that you should say “thank you”, swallow your ego and your desire to avoid conflict. Most experts tell small businesses to be kind to these idiots. Lots and lots of idiots that are on Yelp. What kind of person is leaving a bad review for a struggling business at perhaps one of the worst economic catastrophes in recent memory? And who complains when a business owner is struggling to make their establishment safe for their workers and customers? Idiots, that’s who. Good for all of them.ĭuring the pandemic, Yelp saw a 161% spike in negative restaurant reviews from users and the platform removed over 15,000 bad user reviews related to Covid restrictions. And the veterinarian, the owner of a gun range and appliance repair service who bested the worst of their bad reviews. I’m cheering for the owner of a Colorado sushi restaurant who routinely claps back at unhappy customers. I’m rooting for the owner of the daycare center in Fresno California who filed defamation lawsuits against customers who left bad reviews. And I’m always rooting for the business owner. Meanwhile, a video of a man taunting a bison went viral, and citations have been issued to troublemakers who illegally flew drones and tossed rocks and debris into Yellowstone’s sensitive geothermal features, which risks destroying them forever. This summer has seen a handful of visitors gored or kicked by bison and elk when they ventured too close. Sometimes travelers get more of a souvenir than they bargained for. Impatient motorists tooted their horns as park rangers tried to bring order. Some tourists temporarily abandoned their vehicles in the hope of getting close enough for a photo. Bison passed within inches, even brushing up against the cars. Travelers excitedly scrambled from their vehicles. As the herd moved steadily across the road, a scene of frantic commotion began to unfold. On a recent August day in Hayden Valley, a “bison jam” stretched nearly two miles long. Famed for its grizzly bears, gray wolves and bison herds, the park is arguably “wilder” than it was 50 years ago, thanks to conservation work. In Yellowstone, epic bottlenecks are frequent. In Yosemite, despite a shuttle system, the park warns summer visitors to expect two- to three-hour delays entering Yosemite Valley. Traffic congestion has become one of the most visible consequences of overcrowding and underfunding, with some locations seeing tens of thousands of cars a day during peak months. Ryan Zinke’s attempt to sharply increase entry fees at the busiest parks to pay for repairs proved so unpopular it had to be walked back in April. The current backlog of necessary upgrades to roads, trails and buildings stands at more than $11bn. Much of the National Park Service’s infrastructure dates back to the Mission 66, a $1bn initiative undertaken in the 1950s and 60s, and wasn’t built with modern crowds in mind.Įnvironmental challenges are burgeoning – recent research has found national parks bear the disproportionate brunt of global warming – and years of wear and tear have seen park maintenance fall woefully behind. By the mid-century that number swelled to tens of millions, as more parks were added to the system and destination road trips became synonymous with American vacations.īut today the pace of visitation has outstripped resources. We found a brewing crisis: two mile-long “bison jams” in Yellowstone, fist-fights in parking lots at Glacier, a small Colorado town overrun by millions of visitors. Over a period of four months, from high summer to late autumn, the Guardian dispatched writers across the American west to examine how overcrowding is playing out at ground level. “Our own species is having the greatest impact on the park and the quality of the experience is becoming a casualty.” In Yellowstone, America’s oldest national park, visitation has surged 40% since 2008, topping 4 million in 2017.Īfter 43 years in the park service, Wenk is worried. “The least-studied mammal in Yellowstone is the most abundant: humans,” says Dan Wenk, the former superintendent of one the most chronically overcrowded parks in the system.
